Thomas uses up 1/9 of His Lives over New Year’s
Across the pond, a two-month-old kitten named Thomas was accidentally shut inside a washing machine for five days over the New Year’s holiday, but lived to tell the tale:
The two-month-old tabby hopped in the tub just before owner Darren Nellist and girlfriend Maria Richardson went to stay with friends for new year.
They thought their pet was hiding in the house in Hereford and left food and water out for him.
But it was untouched when they returned and a two-day search failed to find Thomas.
Then Miss Richardson found him unconscious when she filled the washer.
Mr Nellist, aged 34, said: “I thought maybe he had run away or been hit by a car. It was a complete mystery.
“When we opened up the machine and saw him in there I feared the worst. He wasn’t moving so we started panicking and phoned the vet but then after 10 minutes he stood up and walked to his food bowl.
“He must have been really hungry but had probably just spent the whole five days sleeping.
“When he first got up he was a bit wobbly but after he had eaten some food it was like nothing had happened.”

Hello Skeezy, It’s still very hard to believe some of these so called pet owners who loose their pets for such a long period of time. Perhaps it would be better if they didn’t have any pets as they sure aren’t responsible. Fortunately the cat survived. Bosco.
OMC!!!! Poor baby! He looks like he is a young curious cat…. I am so glad he is safe! It is always good to do a kitty check before leaving and also before using/closing appliances….
Are you starting a list of stupid pet owners so we can vote on it at the end of the year? Poor kitty – I hope he is okay!
Why was the door open on it to begin with? Meowm always closes ours. **shaking head** We just don’t understand…..and we are so sad that so many animals have to pay for beans stupidity.
For a start – leaving a two-month old kitten for two days?
I hate hearing these stupid people stories! This person is under a pseudonymous or she is a complete idiot. People need to look at what they are doing with pets and children. They need to get lessons in owning a pet before they can adopt.
I hope they took Thomas to the vet to be checked out anyway! It doesnt sound like they did once he started eating. Poor kitty, I hope he is alright.
I have lots of thoughts on this spinning through my head, but I’m not sure I can say any of them well enough.I feel for the kitty and am most glad he’s ok.
we leave our washer and dryer open, but we do a kitty check before closing. and when all three of us are gone, we have a pet sitter (only if we’l be gone longer than overnight, we do free feeding around here and there’s always water). and my parents said that if we can’t find a person and we’ll all be gone, we’ll just take them to the vet (the clinic the kitties go to offer kenneling, i’m just not sure how much). that’s just dense, was she not looking when she closed the washer door? how else could you miss a bright orange cat.
Always, always *always* check laundry piles and the washing machine just in case cats, and especially kittens, have crept in to play!! (I always have to check my kitchen cupboards too as Stitch likes to jump in and hide!)
So glad this story had a happy ending
