Cat Ladders around the World
Karen Nichols

12

Does your cat have a ladder to allow free egress and ingress to your home?

I’d never seen a cat ladder before I stumbled upon the Cat Ladder blog which features cat ladders from around the world. It’s a Euro-centric site; very few of the photos are from the U.S. Perhaps too many cat burglars in the U.S. view the outdoor ladders as welcome mats.

It’s a facinating site to browse. There are a gazillion different permutations of the basic concept, which is a narrow, stepped structure leading from an upper floor window or cat door onto the ground below. Who knew there could be such variety? I’ve pulled a few of the more interesting contraptions to share with you.

Some of the ladders are affixed to the sides of buildings, and this sort of herringbone pattern is popular:

That design appears to be more stable that the more traditionally styled ladders which rest against the house as in the examples below:

Some boast a rustic simplicity:

Others are anything but simple:

These are my favorites. They’re works of art:

This goes into my “Dream Home” file:

Some of the cat ladders are impossibly tall:

Some take circuitous paths:

And some do double-duty as interior decor:

Monday Movie: Sleeper, The Train Station Cat
Karen Nichols

A few months ago, we reported on Tama, the Japanese cat who performs the stationmaster duties at the Kishi train station. Wearing a jaunty stationmaster’s cap, Tama has been a boon to the local economy.

Well, check out this video of another Japanese train station cat, this one in Hiroshima. This one isn’t quite the high achiever that Tama is. Maybe she needs a stationmaster cap for motivation. Or perhaps she just has a case of the Mondays.

Internet Cafés: Soooo 1999. Check Out a Cat Café Instead!
Karen Nichols

Forget Internet Cafés. The newest rage in Japan is the Cat Café. For just $10 an hour, you can drop by and hang out with a cat. The concept has proved to be very popular in urban areas. The regular customers are mainly 20- and 30-somethings who seek healing by cats, or who simply cannot afford to have pets full time. Some visiters come to the Cat Café three times a week. These photos are from the Nekorobi Cat Café in Tokyo:

Prisoner Stabbed for Scaring Cat
Karen Nichols

In the oddest story of the year so far, a prisoner in New Zealand attacked another prisoner for scaring his cat. Here’s the story from UPI.com:

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Jan. 1 (UPI) — Prison officials in New Zealand said a prisoner nearing the end of his sentence for rape and murder stabbed another prisoner for frightening his cat.

Corrections Association President Beven Hanlon said the attacker was living with the victim in a minimum security self-care unit at Rimutaka Prison in Wellington that was designed to help prepare long-term prisoners for release.

Hanlon said the victim entered the shared living room in the unit Dec. 26, causing the cat to flee. The attacker stabbed the other man six times in the neck and likely would have killed him had a third prisoner not intervened, Hanlon said.

“That prisoner is lucky to be alive,” Hanlon said. The victim was taken to Hutt Hospital and returned to the prison Dec. 28.
