Cat Bong Guy Gets Slap-on-the-Wrist Sentence

Karen Nichols

Acea Schomaker (left), of Lincoln, Nebraska, the doper who stuffed his kitten, Shadow (below), in a bong to calm her down, has been sentenced to a 90-day jail term and $1,171.30 in restitution to go to the Capital Humane Society for its care of Shadow, who has since been adopted.

The judge, Gale Pokorny, asked Schomaker if he had anything to say. Shomaker said, “I screwed up big time, and there’s nothing I can do to take it back.”

In a meeting with a probation officer, Schomaker said he got the idea marijuana smoke would calm the cat, which nipped and scratched him. The day he was arrested, he told deputies he was trying to figure out a way to control the cat without hitting her, as her former owner had.

He said he grabbed Shadow by the scruff of the neck and put her in the box, quickly closing the lid.

“It’s so ridiculous they’re calling me an animal abuser,” he told the probation officer. “I would not be wasting pot on it.”

Schomaker admitted he had been disciplining the cat by putting it in the bong for about three weeks, maybe a couple of times a week.

Shomaker’s fiance, Marissa Vieux, was sentenced to 15 days in jail and $450 restitution for her role in the abuse.

Oliver the Cat Runs a Dog Grooming Business

Karen Nichols

oliverIf you take your dog to the groomer in Fremont, Nebraska, you’ll have to do business with Oliver, Dogs-R-Us Grooming’s CFO (Cute Feline Officer).

Carolyn Headrick owns the business and freely admits that Oliver runs the show. “He has his own fan club,” she said. “People will come in here just to see him, and he eats up the attention. He’s a pretty popular kitty around here. Everybody thinks he’s so cute.”

Oliver was given to Headrick by a client to replace a cat of hers who’d died, leaving her heartbroken. Oliver quickly went to work to fill the hole in Headrick’s heart left by oliver2 her previous cat’s passing. Headricks says that Oliver is “the most laid back, lovable cat you’ll ever see.”

If you go to Dogs-R-Us, you’ll Oliver at his post atop the front counter where he serves as the greeter. He loves all the attention that’s lavished upon him, getting hugs and pets from everyone who drops by.

Headrick says, “He’s a big snuggler. He’s in charge of our customer relations. He gets paid well — lots of love and all the food he wants.

“He loves kids. He’ll let the kids sit up on the counter with him and hug him. He’s even learned to get his picture taken. People will come in and take pictures of him with their phones. He thinks he’s photogenic.”

There’s a disconnect for some people over a cat working at a dog grooming business.

“Some people think we should have a dog as our mascot, but Oliver likes being our mascot,” she said. “A lot of people think it’s a little different. We’re OK with that.”

Doper Stuffs Kitten in Bong

Karen Nichols

In Nebraska this week, Shadow, a sweet six-month-old kitten, was rescued after a 20-year-old doper, Acea Schomaker, stuffed her in his bong and smoked it. His defense? He claims the kitten was acting hyper and that he wanted to calm her down.

The homemade bong featured a 12″ x 6″ plexiglass box as its base, duct-taped to a garden hose.
bongcat2.jpgShadow was taken to the Capital Humane Society, where she appeared to be in good condition Monday according to executive director Bob Downey. In the police car, the cat was extremely subdued, not moving from the blanket in which she was wrapped.

“This cat was just dazed,” Sgt. Andy Stebbing said. “She was on the front seat of the cop car, wrapped in a blanket, and never moved all the way to the humane society.” She appeared to be in good condition Monday, according to executive director Bob Downey. “To the eye, the cat looks OK,” he said. “It cowers in the back of its cage like it’s a little bit afraid but, obviously, given the way it’s been treated, that’s not surprising to me at all.” Tests will be conducted to determine whether Shadow suffered respiratory damage.

aceaschomaker3.jpgDeputies discovered the cat trapped in the device after responding to a domestic disturbance call, said Sgt. Stebbing. Officers left the residence after resolving the dispute, but returned almost immediately when they discovered there was an outstanding arrest warrant on Schomaker for possession of drug paraphernalia. When they re-entered the house, deputies saw the suspect smoking the bong, with the cat trapped inside.

Schomaker was cited for misdemeanor animal cruelty and taken to the Lancaster County Jail on the arrest warrant. He was released after paying a $400 fine. He faces new charges for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. The animal cruelty charge could be raised to a felony if the cat dies or is found to have suffered injury. Shadow’s owner, 23-year-old Marissa Vieux, was charged with misdemeanor animal abuse. According to police, she knew of the incident, and failed to stop Schomaker.

Who thinks Schomaker should get mandatory sterilization as part of his sentence, lest his DNA finds its way into the gene pool?
