Kitten Rescued from Drain Pipe after 4-Day Ordeal

Karen Nichols

A tiny Boston-area kitten is safe, after a four-day ordeal that found her stuck in a plastic drain pipe with no means of escape.

“It was a smooth surface inside the pipe and perfectly vertical. She just wasn’t able to get herself out,” said hero Curtis Hanson, one of the Animal Rescue League rescue technicians who worked for hours on Thanksgiving to rescue the distressed kitten. Hanson and another ARL worked named her “Storm.”

After Storm became trapped in the four-inch-wide drain pipe concerned residents notified animal control of the kitten’s cries for help. Our hero Hanson disassembled the pipes to free Storm.

Once freed, Storm grabbed onto Hanson and immediately started kneading and purring, as if to offer thanksgiving for his efforts. “I think she was just a little scared,” Hanson said of the wet, cold kitten. “They bounce back tremendously from traumatic experiences like this.”

Storm was immediately placed in a foster home and will be free for adoption once she reaches 8 weeks and bulks up to two pounds — about twice her current weight.
