Provide a Safe and Sane 4th of July for Your Pets

The Veterinarians at the Iams Pet Wellness Council have the following tips to help you prepare for a safe holiday weekend for your pets:

Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays.
Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you’ve removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you’re attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations.
If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.
Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn’t leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.
Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Iams formed the Iams Pet Wellness Council to educate veterinarians, veterinary technicians and pet owners about the importance of keeping pets on comprehensive wellness programs.

This week, The Cat’s Meow is accepting entries for the 4th of July parade!

HOW TO ENTER

To enter, just send me a foto of you in yer flashiest patriotic finery, and inklood a valid emale address and link to yer Catster profile or cat blog.

To send the foto, either leave a link to yer foto in the comments field of this post or emale yer foto to me at skeezix AT catster DOT com.

(To get the link fur yer foto, just rite-clik on the online image, selekt “Properties,” and copy the URL after “Location:”. The URL should end with a “gif” or “jpg”.)

ENTRY DEDLINE
11:59 PT on Friday, July 3rd.

RULES
All cats with a Catster profile OR a cat blog are elijible to enter.

All cats in a household may enter, but no more than one cat from a household can be selekted as a finalist.

“Photoshopped” fotos are akseptable.

JUDGING
All appropriately-themed entries will be published in the 4th of July parade heer at The Cat’s Meow. Of those, a minimum of 5 will be selected as finulists. One name will be drawn compleetely at randum frum the finulists names as the Grand Prize winner.
