Fidel Seeks Job as Library Cat
Karen Nichols

Across the pond in Kent, in the seaside community of Deal, Fidel the literary cat (pictured at right) makes daily visits to the Deal library while his owners are at work.

The eight-year-old black cat turns up at Deal library almost every day. He spends the day on his favorite blue chair, leaving only when he sees his owners arriving home.

Members of the library’s staff say they have never tried to encourage Fidel with food and even used to put him outside when he first began to visit them, but he always came back.

Heather Hilton, district manager for Deal Library, said: “Fidel certainly seems to like coming here and he’s very popular with our customers. I think he’s a bit of an art critic, too, because we sometimes see him examining the pictures on the gallery wall,” she added.

A spokeswoman for Kent County Council which runs the library said Fidel was such a “dedicated customer” that he sometimes arrived before the staff, waiting for them at the front door.

Fidel is a rescue cat. His owners adopted him from a local sanctuary after he was found abandoned in a flat in Deal.

That is very cool of Fidel to visit the library….and even cooler that the beans don’t throw him out!

There’s no reason he shouldn’t be a patron, so long as he respects library rules. ;) Well, fine, they can probably make an exception if he bothers other library users for pets, so long as he doesn’t pester them. =P

It’s cool of the librarians to let him stay. =D

I think that is really neat that first Fidel can stay in the libary while his owners are at work and second bring a little joy and comfort to the partons of the libary. I think its a win win situation and I sure wish our libary here in Nevada had a libary cat to pet and love while browzing the book sections or sitting and reading. Way to go Fidel!!!!!!

Maybe Fidel doesn’t like to be left alone after being abandoned in a flat, poor soul. We’re glad he has loving pawrents now and library beans who let him hang out in his favorite blue chair. Besides, black cats are GOOD luck in England! (And in our family, too.)
