Four million cats and dogs—about one every eight seconds—are killed in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Maybe you’ve been meaning to get around to spaying/neutering your pet and just haven’t found the time, or maybe you thought that it would be good for your children to witness the miracle of birth, so you’re going to wait until Fluffy has had a litter or two before you spay her. Whatever the reason, rethink it:

According to the Spay Day USA Web site, it’s estimated that one pair of cats producing two litters a year can have more than 2,000 descendants in four years — and more than 2 million by the end of eight. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats and a proven way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a family who loves them.

According to Vicki Stevens, Spay Day USA national coordinator for HSUS, since the 1970s, when educational programs and affordable spay-neuter programs started to become widespread, euthanasia figures have gone down from 22 percent of the companion animal population in 1973 to about 3 percent now.

Spay Day events around the country are providing low-cost opportunities to spay and neuter your pets. Click here to find a Spay Day event in your area.

It’s super duper important! Get the grapes removed, boys!

Calvin is right! And get those gonads out, girls! Spaying and neutering not only prevents millions of doomed, unwanted kittens from being born, but it often prevents behaviors like spraying, wandering long distances, and endless fighting which leads to injury or the contraction of disease in males. Spay and neuter also prevents reproductive cancers in both genders. We are very happy “fixed” and off the hormone roller coaster, you humans with your different reproductive cycles can’t even begin to imagine! We have much more fun if we aren’t in heat, nursing or pregnant all the time. XXXOOO Ming

Tell it like it is Newman! I had my boys stolen from me at 8 weeks old! It’s all good though. I healed up like a champ with no residual issues.

Mommy says no animals are allowed in this house unless they are spayed or neutered!!!
