China Close to Banning Sale of Cat and Dog Meat
Banning the cat and dog meat trade in China in not just about menu choices and cultural differences, it’s also about the unspeakable cruelty involved in this practice.
A new law animal welfare law is in the works which, if passed, will ban the practice and impose fines upon offenders. Here are the details:
China has decided to ban consumption of dog and cat meat in the country through a new law which seeks a fine of $730 and up to 15-day detention for offenders.
A proposed draft of China’s first law on animal welfare, being prepared by a panel of legal experts, has provision of a fine of up to 5,000 yuan ($730) and up to 15 days’ detention for the guilty.
Those found guilty of selling the meat can be fined anywhere between 10,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan, China Daily reported quoting Beijing-based Mirror Evening News.
“There are still many difficulties to overcome before (legislators) include the article against consumption of dog and cat meat into the draft law,” Chang Jiwen, head of the legal panel was quoted as saying.
“I hope the problem can be solved as soon as possible, although it will be solved sooner or later,” he said.
Chang said the prohibition, however, would not affect the lives of common Chinese a lot as very few people eat dog or cat meat in the country.
He said the proposed draft, which focuses on preventing animal mistreatment, protects six categories of animals — those on farms, in laboratories, pets, working animals, animals for entertainment purposes, and wild animals.
The proposed draft will be submitted to relevant government departments in April.

The anti animal cruelty law is an “expert advisory draft” from China Academy of Social Science and Law, and must be reviewed by the legislative body. How much of it will become legislative propposal remains to be seen.
Also, it does not ban dog/cat meat consumption, only regulation for humane treatment and sanitation for consumer. The academy did consider regional culture and tradition when drafting thie proposal.
BTW, if some Hindus think cows are God, should we not eat beef? Dog and cat are considered food animal in many culture around the world. Rabbit is pet in our society, yet we eat rabbits. If intelligence is the criteria pigs are smarter than cat, but pork chops are okay?
That’s a good point Chas. How do we decide which animals are for consumption, and which ones are good enough to be our companions? I can understand the outrage about the cruelty involved in the dog and cat meat trade, but then why ignore the suffering involved in factory farming? Cows and chickens aren’t cute enough?
this is not about what people eat its about the way the animals are treated before they die, why do people over look this point why make anything suffer,and prolong its death because it makes the meat suposedly more tender the longer the animal suffers, its wicked, inhuman, and barbarick
