Aussie Tabby Rescued after Week inside Air Conditioner
Karen Nichols

A female tabby, since nicknamed “Daikin” was rescued yesterday in Coorparoo on Brisbane’s southside after spending nearly a week trapped within an old air conditioning unit.

The property owner heard strange noises from her 1970s-era air conditioner, but attributed the sounds to a rat infestation.

Rescuers were shocked to find an adult cat in such a tight space.

When we got out there we saw this very old air-con unit built in the 1970’s, a real dinosaur of a thing,” RSPCA ambulance officer Katrina Farmer said today.

“We thought we might be dealing with rats at first, the smell of urine was so pungent.”

Rescue workers said that the badly malnourished and dehydrated tabby had been trapped inside by a turbine for at least five days and could only be freed when the air conditioner was ripped off the wall.

“She is extremely dehydrated, frightened, and skinny which is no wonder after being stuck in there for so long,” RSPCA senior veterinarian Vicky Lomax said.

“She also has burns to her ears, and injuries to her front legs as though she has been dragging herself along.”

Rescuers have no clue as to how Daikin was able to climb inside the air conditioning unit.

“It has really surprised us. Cats are known to squeeze into strange places, but this was a very, very tight space.”

Daikin has undergone surgery today while the animal charity begins the search for her owners.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA’s Fairfield shelter on 3426 9989.

Tabby Tuesday: How the Tabby Got the “M”
Karen Nichols

tabby__1013

Most all tabbies have a distinctive “M” on their foreheads, and there are a couple of legends that describe the origin of the mark.

The first legend comes from the ancient Egyptians. Cats were called Mau, most likely because of the sound they make. The word “Mau” also translated to seeing, or light. Since cats’ eyes appear so luminous at night, they are associated with the moon, and their marking is said to reflect that relationship. The Egyptian Mau is a direct descendant of those ancient Egyptian cats. An offspring of the African Wild Cat, it carries the “M” on its forehead to this day.

One of the most popular of the “M” legends goes back to the birth of Jesus. As the story goes, when the baby Jesus was lying in the manger, he began to shiver from the cold. Mary draped blankets over the infant, but he continued to shiver.

She spoke softly. “I don’t know what to do. I thought you were hungry, so I fed you. I thought you were wet, so I changed your diaper. I thought you were cold, so I wrapped another blanket around you.” She asked the animals in the stable to move closer so that their body heat would warm Jesus, but the child continued to shiver and cry.

She rocked the infant and then laid him back in a manger filled with hay. He continued to cry.

A small tabby cat who’d witnessed the scene knew what needed to be done. She leaped into the manger, cuddled next to the child and began to purr. It was the sweetest lullaby imaginable. The baby stopped crying and drifted off to sleep.

In her gratitude to the cat, Mary marked her own initial upon the tabby’s forehead so that tabby cats would forever remind the world of how one of their kind had comforted the newborn Jesus.

The Islamic world contends that Mohammed had a tabby named Muezza who saved his master’s life by slaying a snake that had slithered into Mohammed’s sleeve. Later, when he was called to prayer, he discovered the cat had fallen asleep upon his sleeve. To avoid disturbing the tabby, Mohammed cut the sleeve from his garment.

From that day forward, every tabby was born with an ‘M’ on his forehead to remind the world that Mohammed loved cats, and that cats should always be respected.

Another version of the Mohammed legend claims that when his cat killed the snake, the grateful Muhammad stroked her back – hence cats never fall on their backs. He also put his noble hand on her forehead and that is why every tabby has four dark lines on her forehead.

My theory? It stands for “Master of the Universe.”

Miko & Atticus Run King’s Bookstore in Tacoma WA
Karen Nichols

mikoandatticus2

Mary, a TCM reader, recently told me the story of hardworking cats Milo and Atticus, who run King’s Bookstore in Tacoma, Washington.

harrrietdickinsonBookstore employee Sweet Pea says that King’s Bookstore has had resident cats for about six years. Their first cat, Harriet (photo at right) was adopted from the Humane Society, but sadly, she went to The Bridge last year. Black cat Miko (in rocking chair at right, above) is also a Humane Society adoptee.

After Harriet died, a stray grey and white tabby showed up, and the bookstore held a contest to name him. The winning name was Atticus (from Atticus Finch of To Kill a Mockingbird). Atticus is in the left chair in the photo above.

According to Sweet Pea, the feline pair hangs out at the store, and some people come to the store just to see the cats. In the morning, Mika and Atticus are attended to after being left in the store overnight. Atticus likes to ride people’s shoulders. Both happily socialize with groups that meet at the bookstore.

Hugo the Cat Saves Neighbor’s Life
Karen Nichols

andyandhugoAcross the pond in the UK, Andy Williams of Bracknell, Berks, is alive because of the quick-thinking heroism of neighbor cat Hugo, who roused him from sleep when his house caught fire.

Williams woke in the middle of the night to find two-year-old tabby Hugo clawing at his face, trying to awaken him. He quickly realized his home was on fire.

Williams said, “I was in a really deep sleep until I felt Hugo’s clawing. As soon as I was awake he flew out the door. I got up to follow him and saw thick black smoke in the hall.”

The blaze was caused by an electrical fault. Firefighters told Williams that he would have been dead within minutes without Hugo’s intervention.

Williams added: “It is hard to comprehend that I owe my life to my neighbor’s cat.”

Darren Hill, Hugo’s owner said, “I am so proud of him.”

Justifyably so. Good work, Hugo!
