300 Chinese Cats Rescued from Dinner Plate
Karen Nichols

Thanks to a tipster, this cat and about 300 others — crammed into 22 bamboo crates in a freight yard in Shanghai — were rescued by animal activists this week.

The cats, likely trapped at night by thieves scouring residential neighborhoods, were awaiting shipment to restaurants in the Guangdong Province.

Most were reunited with their owners. Due to non-existent animal protection laws in China, the dealer and the restaurants will not be charged or punished. The restaurants usually pay the equivalent of about $7 per cat for the meat.

There are no words bad enough for this situation!

Can you publish the contact details for the animal activist group in China so that we can support them?

Also although I agree with all the comments above I’d encourage people to look more closely on how farm animals are treated in the USA and take action to avoid eggs from caged hens, pork where farrowing crates are used etc. Compassion in World Farming or the ASPCA/Humane Society sites are good places to start your research.

How were most reunited with their owners? Did people just come claim them? Were they really the owners or people also looking for a kitty-dinner?

I wish we could adopt a Chinese kitty…

We eat meat too – Mummy included – but she maintains that God gave us special animals such as cats and dogs and horses to be faithful companions and friends, and her standards do not include rewarding them by caging them in appalling conditions and/or eating them.

I agree wholeheartedly with Minxy. Meat from animals and factory farming is making our nation sick. Check out the story “The Flu Lagoon” by Angel Flinn at Care2.com. A better description of hell is hard to come by. The filth is unreal.

Thank goodness these kitties were resuced (At least I hope they were…Christopher poses an interesting question), but so many more are not! China is the same nation where dogs are skinned ALIVE for their fur! It’s a whole different mentality. Thank goodness not all people in China are so cruel and barbaric…The people who rescued those 300 cats are up against overwhelming odds, but at least they’re trying to do something about an appalling situation. I wish we could boycott Chinese goods until they pass some humane laws. Too bad 99% of everything sold in the U.S. is made in China…

China has some serious human rights issues as well…

Mom says China is one place she has no desire to ever see.

Along with several other Asian nations that eat cats and dogs. Sickening!

Mom wishes she could become a vegetarian, but she gets anemic too easily if she doesn’t eat meat, like us!

We refuse to share our canned food with mom!

Unfortunately, with no laws in certain Chinese states, this happens a lot more often then we see in the news. I won’t boycott chinese restaurants. The people that run and own one nearby are hard working friendly people.

What we need to do is to work with international animal organizations to help establish law and animal rights.
