The Hear & Meow: Notes from Catster HQ

Why is My New Primary Image Not That Extra Big Size???

Hi all

Welp, it was quite a carnival ... but we had to update our code so when people uploaded gif and animated gifs they get sized exactly the same way as all the other images people upload. The reason we hadn't done that from the beginning is that the .gif image format was actually proprietary and owned by Unisys. So when we first launched there wasn't good server software to resize gifs so we uploaded the original size and tried to squeeze them as we could into the site.

So it was fun while it lasted, but the over-sized images were becoming too common and messing up too many pages. If you ever wondered why your pet's pages, or group pages or forums pages were getting stretched too far to the right it was because of this issue.

The first fix went live today such that all newly uploaded gifs will get resized exactly as all the other images do. Later this week we'll go back through all the images already uploaded and resize them.

Sorry if we're raining on anyone's parade, it just became too much of hindrance to the overall experience not to fix now that we finally could.

Hip hip hurray! No more messed up pages due to oversized thumbnail pics! It will be such a relief to cross that off our list of things that can goof up a page.

It will be a huge relief not to have to write to some fur and ask them to upload a smaller primary picture so to fix their friend’s page. We never liked asking someone to change their stuff and we only did when it caused problems for others.

I’m with Tessa and think a bit larger would be great but do agree that those ones that knock the pages out of alignment are obscene and ugly. BUT at least larger than what they are now…

Unless you have a close up picture you are unable to see any detail. We love looking at all the beautiful pups and kits but are now very frustrated with the smaller size. We DO agree the terribly oversized had to go.

I agree that the thumbnail pictures are much too small. The joy of looking at our pictures and even seeing any definition is gone. An in between size that will not blow margins out of shape would be more realistic. Groups have a lot of picture contests and we need to see them a bit bigger.

I think you can make them a little larger so we can see the cats! I think you went overboard- way too small.

YES I AGREE THE PICTURES NEED TO BE A LITTLE BIGGER SO WE CAN SEE ALL OF THE CUTE DOGS AND CATS!! SOME OF US DO NOT SEE WELL AND NEED LARGER PICTURES
