Catster Site News and Updates

Our New Vet Blog

Dr. Eric Barchas, DVM, a veterinarian in San Francisco and longtime friend of Dogster and Catster, has launched a blog on our sites. He has been answering pet health questions from our members for years, and he’ll continue to do so in a new, expanded format while also covering animals in the news and a variety of other subjects several times each week.

Check out the brand-new vet blog with information and advice from Dr. Barchas (pronounced “bark-us”—we love that!).

    Dear Dr. Barchas,

My 4 1/2 year old cat Split, who is a strictly indoor kitty, is taking Amitriptyline to help reduce his aniexty and hopefully (so far, so good) stop his spraying. He one of four boys (all feline) in my house and has only recently started spraying. I realized it was Split who was spraying within two weeks and four incidents of the onstart.

I am also using feliway diffusers and pump spray.

My questions: (1) What are feline side effects of the drug? (He seems to be more hungry…wasn’t sure if it’s the drug or something else.) (2) Can the drug Amitriptyline be made into an ointment compound that can be absorbed through the ear (like some thyroid meds.)?

    Many thanks for your help!
