Our feline friends dream just like we do, according to researchers.

Most mammals have the same sleep patterns as humans, fluctuating between what are called non-REM and REM sleep modes. It’s during the REM stage (which stands for Rapid Eye Movement) when several minutes of dreaming occurs. In cats, REM happens about every 25 minutes.

Carefully observing your dozing pet can offer clues to when he or she enters into a dream state. You’ll notice slight jerking of the paws, relaxation of body muscles, whisker twitching and irregular breathing pattern – sometimes deep; other times shallow.

This sleep pattern probably evolved as a safety mechanism for survival, since a little defenseless kitten was better off asleep in the den than out roaming around.
