It can be really irritating to have a cat who insists on jumping up on your kitchen counters and trying to get at the food you’re cooking.
If he does it when you’re in the kitchen preparing food, you may be able to discourage him by saying “no” very sharply and loudly while clapping your hands together to drive him off. Make sure you are not feeding him little snacks while you’re cooking, because that simply teaches him to jump and beg. You’re not crazy. Your cat actually is using different purr sounds to communicate with you. A recent study from Behavioral Ecology at the University of Sussex shows that cats use a manipulative purr sound known as “solicitation purr” that has evolved in part, to get people to respond to them. Fifty human participants listened to recordings of cat purrs and determined that the solicitation purr sounds were indeed more urgent than regular purring. So what’s this mean? Your cat’s working her purr to get your attention.
But don’t tell your friends. They’ll think you’re crazy. Read the full article at <a href=”http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2009/07/13/cats-purring-humans-print.html”Discovery News. Felines are normally fastidious creatures, and prefer a clean living environment. If your kitty’s toileting behaviors are not reliable, a thorough vet check-up is in order to make sure that there are no medical causes contributing to the inappropriate elimination behavior. Clean bill of health? Consider crate-training! In the dog owning community, crate-training is widely accepted as a humane and effective way to train reliable and consistent appropriate eliminations. Crate-training can also be an effective way to modify feline elimination behaviors. Here is a great article on crate training cats, to get you and your kitty started on your way to potty behavior perfection! |

Always check whether urine has soaked through to the carpet padding or the floor below – with fresh deposits you can see or feel the moisture, but a black light will tell you whether old urine marking has affected the underside. Keep in mind that everywhere urine has touched needs to be treated. You have to remove all traces of urine and its odor or the cat will want to go back to that location for a “repeat performance.” |

Cats like vertical spaces, so getting up on the furniture is a natural instinct for cats. They want to get up off the ground, both for safety reasons and for a better visual perspective. One of the reasons to get a well-designed cat tree, with perches and cubbies up high and a built-in scratching post, is that it will dissuade a cat from utilizing your furniture for the same reasons. While most cat lovers are more than willing to share their furniture, if you get a new sofa that you don’t want the cat to hang out on, place a deterrent product like X-Mats, which are flat plastic pads with pointy surfaces that make that object too uncomfortable. |
