I was watching children play with a bubble machine the other day. Then, a dog came up and started chasing the bubbles around. I thought: “What great exercise!” and it dawned on me that it would work equally as well for cats.
There are even bubble machines for pets – like this one here. Or use a kid’s bubble machine. And make sure to use non-toxic bubbles. You can also make your own solution with 2 cups non-toxic dishwashing liquid, 6 cups water, 3/4 cup white Karo syrup. Kelly is a dog columnist and pet writer. She lives in the Boston-area with her three pit bulls and one neurotic cat. |

I am always astounded by the cost for cat trees. Sure, they look cool, but I began to wonder if I could build a perch for my cat with less hassle, using things I already have. So, I looked around my office. I found: a rectangular cube thing with top from Target; a cardboard file container full of bank statements from 1993; a small round plastic trash can in a garish green that had been on sale for $3.99 at IKEA. I placed the cube securely in the corner and wrapped a small blanket around the file container and placed it on top. I cut a hole in the side of the cardboard and the blanket and on top. I then wrapped a small blanket around the small trash can and set it on the very top, to the side. So, Ed can jump to the first floor where there is a landing, go through the holes to another landing and jump to the top of the trash can. The only problem is, now I have no where to put my trash. |

Have you ever bought an expensive cat playhouse only to have your feline turn his nose up at it?
Never fear, there’s a new type of house available for a fraction of the price – the cardboard cottage. These houses are naturally attractive to cats for scratching and hiding. They can even climb in them. Two choices under $40 are available here and here. These are easy to assemble and you cat will thank you, as he plays in the cardboard box it came in. |

This mid-week tip is being brought to you by the letters “P” and “C”
Apples grow on trees, I think, and I am not too sure what a PC is, or what a laptop is, for that matter. Heck, the way I see things I AM THE ONLY LAPTOP you need to concern yourself with… EVER. I do understand that these boxes that you stare into and peck at with your fingers somehow make it possible for you to buy me foods and treats and toys and still have a little something left over for yourself, but it doesn’t mean that you have to sit in front of it all night long. Pssst! Hey buddy, I am over here! Turn off your computer and play with me every now and then. Or just sit with me and pet me. Or heck, I’ll even let you brush me if it means time with ME, ME and more ME. Believe me when I say that those so-called LOLcats and cute little kitty vids have nothing on me. Shut it down and get over here. I AM THE REAL DEAL and there’s nothing more stress relieving for both of us than a little one-on-one hang out time. We’ll both be purring in no time at all… trust me. |

Ready to rumble? Drop an ice-cube on the floor and watch kitty try to figure out if it’s friend, foe, or hockey puck. If you’re a truly devoted cat parent, freeze some tuna juice in an ice-cube tray and let kitty enjoy the icy treat. |
|
If you notice your cat washing his/her paws, face, and belly after a play session, congratulate yourself! The grooming behavior is a sign kitty is all tuckered out. Can a cat nap be far away? |

If a cat is bored he can become a pest. If your cat doesn’t get enough physical (as well as mental) challenges then he may become pesky, always trying to get your attention. You should give him that attention in the form of playing with him for (a minimum of) five-minute sessions, which should eliminate his nagging for attention. |
|
If you have an overweight cat, the stimulation of the tree will help him or her shed some pounds. You obviously cannot take a cat for a walk (well, some people do, but it’s rare) and a cat tree allows and encourages a cat to exercise. |

The solution to a cat that won’t let you sleep is to amuse him and stuff his belly as close to your bedtime as possible. For a “nocturnally lively” cat, the later he eats, the more it encourages him to sleep soundly and not bug you during the night. Throw in a play session in the neighborhood of five to ten minutes before you go to bed and you’ll have a happily tuckered-out cat, ready for some shut-eye. |
