In case you haven’t noticed, we’re pretty dependent on you to let us know when it’s time to do stuff. You tell us when it’s time to go to the vet (usually by stuffing us in a box and just taking us there) and you tell us when to eat. Both are important, though the latter is MUCH more enjoyable.
But what about play time? Most of us would play all day if we could, so we’re really appreciative of any dedicated play time you can give us. Make a point to schedule play time with your cat for the same time every day – that way he or she will have something to look forward to while you’re off bringing home the bacon! Cats get bored, just like we all do. So it’s very important to take them time to play with them.
Cats love to chase the plastic caps from bottled water – a free toy! And many cats will play fetch with you. Mine will chase a balled up piece of paper and bring it back. Took a while for him to get the idea, but once he did, his understanding of “fetch” is better than the dog’s. |

For an activity that’s fun for both of you, put some catnip on a sheet of newspaper. Your cat will love rolling around on it, and clean-up is very easy. Sure beats needing to vacuum catnip off the rug! |

It’s important to play with your cats, especially if they are under five years old. Ignoring them can cause behavioral problems which often manifest themselves in destructive acts like inappropriate chewing, scratching and eliminating.
But sometimes, Fluffy is ready to play and you just can’t. You’ve got a big deadline, or the kid is sick and you just don’t have a couple of minutes to spare flicking the wand toy. What then? Ping pong balls to the rescue! Put your cat in the bathtub and throw in a couple of ping pong balls. Fluffy will be able to entertain herself for hours, and you won’t end up with a bunch of cat toys camped out with the dust bunnies beneath the refrigerator. |
