Cats do not like changes in their environments. New sights, sounds and smells can be stressful for them. Since a baby will present all those challenges to a cat, you want to introduce as many infant elements before hand as is possible. There are CDs of baby sounds you can play in the background in the months before your baby arrives. Little by little you can bring in the baby equipment and prepare the nursery and you can also put up a gate on the nursery door so that while the cat can see and smell all the new stuff, she can learn from the beginning that the nursery is off limits. While there’s no need to be super fastidious, you should keep in mind that your cat’s paws have been in a litter box, covering up waste, and you may not want those feet inside the crib or even on areas of the carpet where the baby may spend a lot of time.
