The Daily Cat Tips

Litter box liners may seem like an easy way to empty used litter and keep the litter box clean, but they can actually make a box very stinky! Liners that don’t fit perfectly can create folds where urine can pool. Also, cats’ claws can poke holes in the liners as they scratch, which allows urine to seep through and settle on the bottom of the box.

Some cats object to the feel of the liners, especially ill-fitting or noisy ones. This may lead to litter box aversion if it becomes an uncomfortable place for them to step into.

The best way to keep the litter box clean is to scoop it a couple of times a day. Thoroughly scrub the box and change the litter as often as needed. Don’t take a shortcut by using litter box liners.

The best thing is to alternate boxes. I have two. When one gets dirty enough to change; I have a fresh one that I put clean litter in, and I scrub the dirty one with soap and water and let it air dry.

i am appalled by dirty bathrooms, and very seldom use public, the way i see it is the cleaner the litter box the cleaner all around is the rest of the house only makes sense, and much healthier for my most important pets.

Cat litter is a good discussion that could go on and on. Pam is right in saying keep it clean. I don’t agree that liners and other “not so short cut” methods don’t work. Let’s face it, some folks are not able to clean a tray twice throughout a day. Likewise, you may have two trays or more available and find one tray seems to be the favorite for everyone. I have two trays out, two cats, fortunately they seem to go fifty fifty in useage of both trays. I shovel the waste out in the morning and later that day. I also leave magazine paper in the bottom of the tray to absorb and keep excess moisture from sticking in gooie globs on the bottom of the tray. Usually two shovel pick ups and then empty the tray and start a fresh batch.
Cats are finicky and want a clean place to go potty but they also need to smell their potty. That doesn’t mean its not clean. When everyone who comes in the house goes, ugh, then its not clean. A clean tray does NOT stink!

I got my cat about 8 months ago end of May from a former neighbor of my sister’s. She’d been found under neath the shed in the neighbor’s back yard about 4-5 months before that in the winter as a kitten. She looked to be about 5-6 months old. When I got her she was just about grown, about 10 months is my guess. Not much of a kitten but still not quite full grown. Any ways, after getting the initial litter box that comes with the scoop and food water bowels. The following month I bought one of the Boodah brand covered. It came with the filter thing that you put in the top. LOVE THAT. Also came with a liner. Was not impressed by it. Ceili put holes in it!
