If you’re only going to buy one book about cat care, consider the Cat Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook by Debra Eldredge, DVM, Delbert Carlson, DVM, Liisa Carlson, DVM, and James Giffin, MD. This book provides complete and understandable information about your cat’s anatomy and physiology, as well as preventive health and a variety of diseases that can affect your cat. The authors also discuss geriatric care, genetics, vaccinations, and how to deal with emergencies. It’s well worth the $35 cover price.

This book is the BEST! I have an older edition but the info is still good. I have found the Carlson/Giffin book to be indispensable. All the pages of my copy are dog-eared (no pun intended) and underlined, but I have learned a lot about helping my kitties. I also have the “Dog Owner’s” version, and it, too, is excellent. Just one thing: you can get great used copies on the Internet for half the price. Well worth it!
