Use blunt-tipped animal hair scissors to cut out things stuck in your cat’s coat that you cannot brush out. You’ll also need round-tipped scissors to be able to cut out debris or a feces mat – although if the hair is matted close to the skin you should not attempt cutting it or you might cut her. Leave that bit to the pros.

We use a pair of doctor’s scissors which are use to cut off bandages and plaster casts. Works very well when the cat will hold still.
NEVER take scissors to a cat! I have seen so many in my grooming career that have been cut up and some even needing stitches because the owners want to save a few dollars and not have it done professionally. It’s not worth the risk! If you must do it at home, invest in a good pair of clippers and a 10 blade and have someone help keep the cat still while you remove mats.
Thank you for the reminder, Tracie. If there is a mat in the hair, I will cut just the top part and then try to work out the rest with my fingers. Better a mat in their hair then a cut on their skin.
