Siamese cats and some of the other Orientals (as breeds like the Burmese are called) have a different reflecting layer on cells in their eyes.
While other cats’ eyes appear gold or green when a flashbulb or car headlight is shined, a Siamese cat’s blue eyes appear to have a reddish tinge when lit up. You’ll see that red eye in photos taken with a flash attachment. Radio show host and pet expert Tracie Hotchner is the author of The Dog Bible and The Cat Bible. And my blue-eyed lynx point Bengal’s show red while his mother, who is a chartreuse-eyed marbled Bengal reflect green.
I have (what my Vet calls a pure black Siamese). His iris’ are very strange, almost triangular! Very different from other cats I have owned.
My Lynx point Siamese eyes appears with a reddish hinge, and my other two cats that are tabby’s appear yellow.
So what does this mean…This reflective coat? Just different colors? Does it affect their eyesight at all?
I believe that most blue eyed cats will have a red reflection when photographed with a flash. In the Aqua eyed cats and in my RagaMuffin breed, we are often wondering if the cat is a color point with blue eyes or a mink with aqua eyes. By taking a flash picture the aqua eye will flash green/yellow and the blue eye will flash red. So, it is not unique to the Oriental breeds but to the actual eye color. The Ragdoll cat who must have blue eyes will always flash red.
I now have a BluePoint Siamese Maxine 2 years old and her eyes turn Gold colour, not red!! Before her I had a Tonkinese “big Lover boy” Spanky with blue eyes (he lived to be 16), who I had the longest and best conversations with, and a sweetest little SealPoint Siamese girl CoCo ( who lived only 4 years thanx to my husband, but I do not want to go to details) and both their eyes flashed red under certain light. How come Maxine’s (my BluePoint) eyes do not turn red all the time?? That’s why I call her my Goldie. She, as both my cats before her are very precious to me, as I loved them most of all people. I think that Siamese cats are the smartest (and I love smart people!). She plays ball, retrieves, comes when I call her and walks on a leash when we travel with our RV. She travels well!! She knows not to meow, because it would aggravate my husband. Now she is starting to talk to me and knows when to jump down from the table (when my husband comes home), not that she is there all the time, only when I sit there and read a newspaper, she just wants to be at my eye level! And yes, she gives me kissess, and a little love bites on my nose, and she knows what NO means. I could go on and on…. She is my Sweety, Precious, Goldie, Princess, Silky (that’s how her coat feels like), and I love her more than anybody!!! You can see her baby picture on Sympatico/ Lifestyle/ Pets/ Cutie kittens. She is on the first picture and she was then only a baby of 5 weeks. My Maxine!! I wanted a boy, since I heard that boys are more smoochy, so I picked it up, actually it picked me, it started crawling up my leg (first of all the kittens in the litter) and it let me pick it up high not being affraid and I said that’s Max my cat. We bonded for 4 weeks (my husband was gone at that time). After 5 more weeks it became Maxine, when my vet doc after long examination verified it. And now she is still my Max. My precious Lovey and yes we do have a dog too (american cocker spaniel girl Samantha 3 year old, my husband’s) that Maxine rules and loves too!! Like all Siamese and that’s how it should be!!
