The Daily Cat Tips

A cat may confuse the feel of the carpet with litter or may use the carpet as an alternative if the box isn’t clean enough. If there is wall-to-wall carpeting where you want to put the box you would do well to place a sheet of clear, hard plastic underneath it. These sheets are available at office supply stores and home improvement stores for use underneath desk chairs.

better yet, use a auto drip pan, like you’d put under your car in the garage to catch oil leaks. They have a little lip around the edge and it contains the stray litter.

I bought the cheap door mats from WalMart and put one under each litter box. Never had anything done on a rug since.

My litterbox is on a hard surface, but I put a carpet square in front of it for the litter that comes off of the paws. I used to have one of those litter mats in front, but the cats hated it so much they would jump into and out of the cat box over it. After feeling the hard plastic projections on it, I agreed with them and replaced it with the carpet square.
