There’s a general thought that all cats are aloof, self-sufficient, and would rather have fleas than obey a command. But there is a sub-group of felines that don’t seem to know this and happily come when called, fetch, beg, and even perform tricks.
Some cat owners would say it’s shameful to own a cat who does these things but those of us with such cats know differently. These cats tend to be very affectionate and trainable and have a good sense of humor. Not that there’s anything wrong with the traditional feline. The seriousness of their dignity is often good for a laugh. Among the breeds that tend to act more dog-like are the Burmese and Siamese. If your cat acts like a dog, you are not alone. There’s even a group here at Catster for those people. But, we must ponder: how do we know it’s not actually dogs that act like cats? Kelly is a pet writer. That is right!, How do we know that dogs are not acting like cats!!
I’ve always heard that the Maine Coons are the dogs of the cat world. It’s sure been my experience.
We have been adopted by a Meezer(Siamese) who comes when called. He is a stray, ok he was a stray
I decided to call him Fur Face, I’m not sure why. So there I was sitting on the couch and called Hey Fur Face how about some lap time. He dropped what he was doing, came right over and pretty soonI had a cat head in my lap. Now since then I have called for him with Here kitty kitty, Hey Frank Sinatra, and a number of other names. He could not care less. As soon as I utter Fur Face he is right there.
As to calling him Frank Sinatra once, think about Frank’s nick name
Perhaps one just needs to realize the spectrum of behavior available to cats and dogs…. shiba inu are very “catlike” in some of their behaviors, as are (surprisingly enough) huskies…. what’s next… cows that are horselike and horses that are cowlike? Lions that are nbearlike and bears that are lionlike? I’m not sure what kind of “expert” starts this kind of thread, actually…. perhaps one who wants to oversimplify the ranges of animal behavior to match their “expertise”?
The kitty who owned my humom before me (Lucky) was just like that, or so I am told.
Lucky walked better on a leash than any dog my humom has ever owned. She would come when called, even when out playing in the woods. When Mom wanted the dog to come (they would play together and explore the woods) Mom would call Lucky, because the dog was too interested in smelling stuff. Lucky would come a’running and the dog would follow.
Lucky also played fetch, hide and seek and could catch a rolled up wad of paper or other such small object.
Mom says that Lucky was her soul mate, a cat who will never be replaced. But, I try.
I am a traditional feline through and through. No acting like a dog for me.
My cat Nemo (RIP) played with our dogs, from the time he was a kitten. He would eat dog food, sleep with and play just like he was part of “the pack”. The funniest thing to see was, when, Goober Teka Pit and Curley would run along the fence line chasing those annoying motorcycles, and in the middle of the motorcycle frenzy was Nemo running the line with the dogs… Not sure if he was meowing, but I know he would have barked if he could.
Thanks for the wonderful insight everyone!
ofrmgfo – that was so funny! What was Frank’s nickname?
Leanna – you have a wonderful way with words.
Lance – I have that with Huskies, too. Please don’t put people down in posts.I could easily expound on dog ad cat behavior and spout out statistcs and analyzations. I write this tips to get a dicussion going, to get others’ opinions as well, not to prove how smart I am.
I adopted a 3 month old male kitten from animal control over a year ago and as soon as we got home, he was taken out of the cat carrier and jumped out of my husbands hands and in the way of one of my germ shep dogs and right away started playing with the germ shep. It was like the two knew each other and not afraid of each other. The cat is like a dog in a cat costume and trying to get out. The cat is supposedly indoor cat but when the dogs go outside, the cat cries if he can’t go outside with them. He can only go outside if someone holds him. The dogs and cat sleep together and play together. What a pleasure to have, and such a cheap entertainment. I wish I knew how to download their pix off the internet to twitter.
