The scene is set – Fluffy is resting by the fire, curled up in an adorable ball and purring peacefully. You turn away and the next thing you see is Fluffy shooting from the room, a waft of singed fur behind her.
It may seem obvious but sometimes we don’t consider the safety issues surrounding fire and cats. The fact is that cats are often drawn to flame for its warmth and flickering motions. If you have a fireplace, make sure you have a well-fitting screen in front of the opening and keep your cat out of the room when starting a fire. If you’re a candle fiend, make certain all candles are out of reach of your cat or place your cat in another room while having a candlelight dinner. It’s also wise to keep cats off stoves – electric stoves can produce a lot of heat slowly resulting in burned noses and toes. With a little forethought, you can have your crackling fire and romantic evenings and keep your cat safe too. Kelly is a dog columnist and pet writer. Excellent warning guys !
Both of mine are enchanted with any lit candle, especially Merlyn, who’s long hair frightens the life out of me… Consequently, there are NO ’scent’ candles in either bathrooms, for fear a visitor may decide lighting is necessary, unaware of the danger !
GOOD WORK, yet again…
God Bless,
luv sjg
Cats often know how to save one of their 9 lives. I have seen it. The cat gets singed and hair on fire he drops and rolls and puts it out. Smart cat. Also I have had a cat save me from fire. A lamp caught fire while I slept in a hospital bed at home and he jumped up and down on my chest meowing very frantically. He saved my life.
We don’t light candles either. Sonny made a sudden leap up on top of our eating bar and plopped his big fluffy tail right onto the torch. I was too shocked to scream at the sight of my kitty’s tail ablaze! Unbeknownst to him, he jumped to the floor real quick extinguishing his flaming tail. It was a stroke of luck that only his fur was singed off leaving nary a red spot on his denuded skin. It was also a very funny sight in the aftermath. No candles have been lit since.
Sheila:
Thanks!
Wally:
What a wonderful story.
Sonny’s Mim:
I have to say I laughed a little
but am so glad he’s O.K.
