Cat Tips

Until you add a cat to your life you won’t have realized how many cords there are in the average house. From curtain cords to lamps, computers, kitchen appliances, telephones, hair dryers or irons, they’re everywhere.

While cats all like to play with cords, kittens are especially vulnerable because they play with things by putting them in their mouth. If a kitten chews an electrical cord she can get burned or cause a house fire. If she gets tangled up in window blind cords she can get trapped and strangle.

Make sure to always keep all types of household cords out of the reach of your little kitties.

I always wrap my blind cords up and out of the way. One of my cats likes anything that dangles and I’m afraid the blinds will fall down, or worse he could get wrapped up in the cord.

My cat, Otto, fell into the knotted drawstrings for the window blinds one time and was hanging against the wall, slowly being strangled when I luckily came into the room. After saving my dear little traumatized pal, I cut the ends off the cord and have been hyper-vigilant about such dangers ever since.

It really is scary to think how a tragedy can happen in a second. Hi Kathay- my book THE CAT BIBLE has a pretty extensive list of ALL the things that pose a danger to your kitty in the house and I think it’s worth checking out so you are prepared. Dangling cords are actually easy to anticipate and get out of harm’s way: definitely cut any cords that are connected to another cord ( as Riley did). To then keep the single cords out of sight, you can screw a small hook up high on the window trim and keep all the loose cord hooked up on it.
