Cat Tips

Cats aren’t terribly particular when it come to a toy – if it moves quickly and “quirkily,” provides a place for him to hide so he can attack your ankles as you walk by, or it has a pungent smell, he’ll be fascinated. An easy chase toy to make uses a wire, a string and a feather.

Attach the string to the wire, the feather to the other end of the string and make it dance in front of your cat. Then pull the feather around the room until he catches it.

Another idea is to use a sack or medium cardboard box. Put some light material, like a sheet over it, leaving enough space for your cat to slink under it into the box. Tap on the closed end of the sack or box and then the side, then the back again. Do this for awhile and your cat will be tuckered out from trying to catch the sound.

An old sock that smells like you works wonders, too. Add catnip and tie it off – your cat gets two smells in one.

If you cat IS finicky, try out each of the types of toys – you’re sure to pique his interest with one of them.

I discovered by accident when I dropped a green olive that the herbal properties make my cats act just like do with catnip!!! They’re very possessive of their olives and the scent apparently lasts longer than catnip.

We have a big yellow male cat who is afraid of most feather and moving toys after about 30 seconds. We found his favorite toy is an empty toilet paper roll with treats inside. We cover each end with scotch tape criss crossed and if he rips and rolls it, they eventually drop out (NO, he won’t touch the commercial plastic ones). He likes this so much that every night before bedtime we give him one and he expects/demands it now. Neighbors save their old rolls for us to augment out supply.

Great tips, Kelly. Here’s a story on how I am taming my crazy cat Crosby, who wants to play with my anti-social cat Gaijin: http://www.thedailytail.com/?p=803

Ashley loves hair ties and q-tips. She bats them all over the floors and likes to push them under doors then run around and grab them quickly. She doesn’t even want help playing with them, all I do is drop one and she’s happy for awhile.

Another great toy for cats that you can get for $1.50 is stress balls. My cat loves them as he can get them in paws and throw them around and also likes to hit them and chase around the house.

My one cat littlebit loves pennies. paper wads, and q-tips. We have to put something in front of the linen closet. He sometimes sneaks in there. Plus his loves clean tampons. That’s another thing we have to hide from him. He is a peice of work. If we would on known the trouble he cause us we would of named him trouble. Now we have a 3 month old kitten and her name is trouble because when I got her she had fleas roundworms and a bad eye infection. The poor thing was sick. But I love her, I love all mt cats. Talk to ya later

My cat Gizmo likes to steal my hair scrunchies, individually cellophane wrapped candies or coughdrops, wadded up paper, and inkpens. Who needs to buy toys, he never plays with them much!
