You can tell spraying from just urinating based on the location of the urine. When a cat urinates outside the box, there will be a puddle on the floor. With spraying the urine is deposited vertically on an object. When a cat sprays it is usually on an upright object: the cat remains standing and sprays the urine vertically behind her, which leaves a stream of urine rather than a pool of it.
