Cats like vertical spaces, so getting up on the furniture is a natural instinct for cats. They want to get up off the ground, both for safety reasons and for a better visual perspective. One of the reasons to get a well-designed cat tree, with perches and cubbies up high and a built-in scratching post, is that it will dissuade a cat from utilizing your furniture for the same reasons.
